What is crop protection?

Weeds and other pests, both vertebrate and invertebrate, are only some of the threats that crop protection eliminates.

To help reduce the losses, farmers use an approach called the Integrated Pest Management or IPM. This is where they use the best combination of cultural, biological, and chemical measures to keep their crops pest-free. The IPM system provides the most cost-effective, environmentally sound, and socially acceptable method of managing diseases, insects, weeds, and other pests in agriculture. The most basic IPM principle is to develop pest control strategies that take all relevant control tactics and locally available methods into consideration, and are attuned to local environment and social needs. The successful IPM user will then evaluate the cost-effectiveness of each alternative, as well as the whole pest control strategy.

One of the more successful pest control campaigns involves chemicals. With chemical intervention, there are three categories: herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides. Herbicides kill or stop the growth of unwanted weeds. Weeds are a common threat to farmers worldwide. These plants fight with food crops for space, water, and soil nutrients. Insecticides kill insects and mites. There are more than 10,000 species of plant-eating insects that attack farmers’ crops and are leaving food damaged and inedible. Fungicides destroy or prevent the growth of disease-causing fungi in your crops. Fungi are responsible for over 50,000 diseases that kill plant cells from inside crops.

Farmers use chemical sprays to lessen the crop damage caused by pests. Insect pests can have large and irreversible effects on crops, which can impact consumers by charging them higher crop prices. This is the same philosophy we employ when we want to rid our gardens of pests and plant disease. If we do it for our flowers, why shouldn’t we do it for our food? Without using any crop protection product or technique, crop yields are bound to decline drastically. The entire effort of farmers will be of no use in the absence of crop protection techniques.

A proper crop protection strategy should be developed by farmers; they should be frequently provided with the training for adopting the right pest management strategy for their farm. Knowledge on these aspects will help the farmer successfully implement his crop protection techniques right from the beginning. A farmer should also be trained in choosing the right pesticide and when to spray so that it successfully acts as plant growth regulators.
